Madeiras
Madeiras are aged in wood and are normally bottled for sale when 3, 5, 10 or 15 years old, depending on their quality and ageing potential. The very finest Madeiras will become Vintages.
Vintage Madeiras are made from the very finest wines of an excellent year and are produced from only one of the traditional grape varieties. Among the world's most long-lived wines, many show outstanding quality when well over 100 years old.
The four basic Madeiras are named after their principal grape variety and encompass styles ranging from dry to rich wines.
Malmsey: full-bodied, lusciously rich and fruity with an appealing honeyed quality. An excellent dessert wine. Bual: medium rich, smooth and well-rounded with an attractive smoky complexity and raisiny fruit flavor. An excellent cheese accompaniment. Verdelho: tangy and medium-bodied, elegant and dry with a pronounced edge. Delicious as an aperitif or with a soup course. Sercial: fresh and invigorating, light-bodied with crisp zesty fruit. As the driest Madeira, it makes an excellent aperitif.
