Harmonious and elegant
Appellation: Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC
Grape varieties: 85% cabernet sauvignon, 15% cabernet franc.
Vinification and ageing:
Thanks to propitious climatic conditions, the harvest was carried out as usual and without any particular adjustments, beginning in the first ten days of September and ending during the first week of October.
The grapes were fermented in contact with the skins for approximately 15 days at controlled temperatures in steel tanks, undergoing a series of pumping overs and delestages.
The wine develops in French oak barriques for 24 months. It is additionally aged for 6 months in glass before being released on the market.
Sassicaia opens with an intense ruby red colour with incredible concentration and depth. It has a complex and very elegant aroma crowned by hints of red fruit. The flavour is powerful, concentrated, and has a luxurious density, with soft and well-balanced tannins. On the palate it is rich and dense, and at the same time harmonious and elegant. This wine is decidedly long and lingering, with a significant organoleptic density and a polyphenolic profile which, together, ensure this wine's extraordinary longevity.
The winter was long and severe, thereby ensuring the proper standstill in plant growth and a natural elimination of the vines' primary parasites. Spring was characterised by temperatures which were below seasonal averages, accompanied by abundant rains up until the second half of May. These conditions caused a delay in some of the phenological phases of the vines, in particular with regards to flowering and fruit setting, thereby contributing to a natural reduction in yield per hectare. The summer season, on the other hand, progressed excellently, with average temperatures and plenty of sunshine, which helped to ensure an optimal veraison. Significant fluctuations between daytime and nighttime temperatures towards the end of summer encouraged the gradual phenolic ripening of the grapes.
